White Wizard Games has launched a new Kickstarter: Star Realms Frontiers!

Star Realms Frontiers Kickstarter has launched!  This is an expansion set for Star Realms, a  Deckbuilding/Trading Card game by the genuinely nice people from White Wizard Games which I demo'ed at Gen Con last year.  Did I say expansion?  This is a set of NINE expansions, all new for this Kickstarter.  I'm going to copy and paste from the Kickstarter page now:

  • Frontiers is a deckbuilding game for 1-4 players, that is both a standalone game and fully compatible with Star Realms Deckbuilding Game and all of its expansions!
  • Stellar Allies is a 12-card Kickstarter exclusive multi-faction expansion pack!
  • The Alignment, The Alliance, The Coalition, The Pact, The Union, and The Unity are 17-card Command Decks that allow you to play as a legendary commander in the Star Realms universe!
  • The Lost Fleet is a Kickstarter exclusive* Command Deck!
I'm not going to go into a full overview of how to play the game, except to say that you should bring a snack when you sit down because the game will probably run longer than you think, especially if you are playing with cutthroat friends (and if you have friends who won't try to undermine your Authority and ruin all your Trades, you need better friends!).

While this post is probably going out too late to let anyone get in on the Day 1 Backer benefits, I still feel I should mention it.

Star Realms is genuine fun, and if you are looking for a Kickstarter to back, White Wizard Games is a solid company that will fulfill their Kickstarter pledges.

Review: Soulworker, or, Welcome to the Grind

Soulworker is an anime action brawler, created by Lion Games and published by GameForge.  Set in a post-apocalyptic purgatory, you play one of (currently) four young schoolchildren who fell from the real world into the world of Soulworker.  The tutorial gives you the setting, which varies slightly for each character, and then moves you to the first hub area.  From there, you begin questing so you can get gear so you can do harder quests for more gear and to progress the story, using energy every time you enter a quest area.  The combat is a lot of fun, but if you're unwilling to pay - the current in-game economy is beyond ridiculous, and the premium currency is wildly overpriced - the game gets very grindy. The characters are the different classes, and the character designs are all very charming, even if they go a bit far on the 'females are to be looked at' side.  There's Haru, a broadsword wielding pre-med student who is apparently allergic to things coveri...

Review: Gen Con 2008

This year, Gen Con celebrated its 41 st straight year of being “The best four days in Gaming” while simultaneously mourning the loss of Gary Gygax, considered to be one of the fathers of modern roleplaying.   Approximately 85,000 consumer and professional attendees filled the Indianapolis Convention Center for the four days of the convention, shopping, eating, and exploring not just the space allocated to Gen Con but a large part of downtown Indianapolis as well. Gary Gygax passed away earlier this year at the age of 69 at his home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, where the very first Gen Con was held in 1967.   One of Mr. Gygax’s favorite charities (among many) was the Fisher House ™ Program, which provides “comfort homes” near major military and VA hospitals, enabling military families to stay near one another in times of crisis.   Annually, the Fisher House™ program serves more than 10,000 families, and have made available nearly 2.5 million days of lodging at no cost t...
